Social Sustainability

“We believe in ‘growing our own timber,’ and invest in upskilling and training our staff from within the company by sending them on courses, and empowering staff members through training, allowing them to build on their careers and take ownership of their positions.”

CSI- Corporate Social Investment

An industry in perpetual evolution requires personnel that are comfortable with one foot in the present and the other, in the unknown. Cultivating a sense of ownership, responsibility, and accountability wrapped in creativity, innovation, and continuous improvement are central to our development and longevity. We stimulate this culture through recognising that our employees are our greatest asset and by responding with passion.

Our collaboration with a number of tertiary institutions and their respective food sciences departments have resulted in Work-Integrated-Learnerships for more than 120 final year students to date. An initiative, that provides our South African youth afflicted by high levels of unemployment with practical experience while expanding our knowledge bank and solidifying our future management structures.

Rooted in the macadamia industry, we envisage a future that embraces accredited Standard Operating Procedures that elevates a workforce, shapes careers, and delivers pioneering processing ingenuity. Our investment in a Certified Training Centre will nurture the skills required to remain an industry leader spanning quality, consistency, food safety, and new product development. We look forward to a bright representative future for all participants in an ever competitive yet exhilarating environment.

Education & Bursaries

Green Farms Nut Co. is passionate about investing in the youth of South Africa, and help provide educational opportunities to young, enthusiastic graduates with a passion for agriculture. We have partnered with two agri-educational focused initiatives (RecruitAgri & Agricolleges International) that provide opportunities to those interested in pursuing a career in agriculture.

We have recently taken on students that require experiential training or internships as part of their degrees or diplomas in our factories and thereby training the new generation of macadamia specialists. We however believe in ‘growing our own timber’, and invest in upskilling and training our staff from within the company by sending them on courses, and empowering staff members through training, allowing them to build on their careers and take ownership of their positions.

Environmental Sustainability

“Pioneering in advising growers on green practices. ”

Environmental Sustainability

While “Corporate Social Investment” typically refers to an organisation’s attitude and actions towards people, we believe in taking it further by investing in the environment. The survival of not only the macadamia industry, but ultimately our planet, depends on the way we go about treating nature. Green Farms Nut Co. has been pioneering in advising growers through various contact and communication platforms on ‘green’ practices. The Southern African macadamia industry has responded incredibly well. There is a tendency to improved irrigation techniques, coupled with monitoring of soil water content. The planting of cover crops in conjunction with reduced herbicide usage is visible. Furthermore, increased and improved monitoring of pests, as well as usage of biological control products all lead to a healthier environment that will be enjoyed by future generations.

Here is an inspiring video of an award-winning grower, Wally Klar, and his approach to conserving the environment.

Emerging Farmers

“We ensure that our emerging growers learn from the experts in the industry. ”

Emerging Farmers

Our values include inclusivity and building community engagement and we are part of a number of emerging farming projects.

East Cape Macadamia
East Cape Macadamia manages two farming projects, namely Amajingqi Macadamia Farming in Transkei and Ncera Macadamia Farming near East London. We are partnered with, and contributed financially to this highly successful for-profit social enterprise. The community has run a government-backed macadamia nut farming initiative of 700 hectares since 2013, with the potential to expand further in the future. https://ecmacadamia.co.za/

Vhembe project, Limpopo
Founded in 2009: a co-operative of farmers with about 350 members. We have funded the project which supports 15 emerging macadamia farmers in the region, and work with them closely to build a profitable farming operation.

Emerging farmer workshops / study groups
We ensure that our emerging growers learn from the experts in the industry. Technical study groups are held on a regular basis and are well attended.
